Looking for a pet that goes beyond the standard dog, cat, fish, or horse? Check out these more exotic animals that make cool pets.
85 million American families currently own a pet. And there’s a good reason why! Pets offer companionship and plenty of entertainment.
But what if you’re not much of a cat or dog person? Well, as it turns out, there are tons of cool pets that may be the right fit for you.
Do you want to know more? Keep reading to discover the top 5 animals you didn’t know you could have as a pet.
1. Hedgehog
If you were a fan of Sonic the Hedgehog as a kid, you may be thrilled to know you can own your very own pet hedgehog. Plus, these are relatively low-maintenance animals, and they can easily be kept in an apartment.
You’ll need a cage that’s at least 30 by 24 inches, an exercise wheel, and special hedgehog food to keep them happy and healthy. Consider getting a young hedgehog and make sure you handle it often, so you can have a friendly and cuddly pet.
2. Sugar Glider
If you want something more exotic, you can’t go wrong with a sugar glider. These little fellas can bond with their humans and are small enough to fit in the palm of your hand.
You’ll want to give them a nice enclosure with plenty of room to glide around and branches to climb on. One of the best parts of owning a sugar glider is that you won’t need to buy special food. Their diet consists of cooked meats, eggs, raw nuts, and fresh veggies—all things you probably already keep on-hand.
3. Ocelot
The beautiful markings on these small wild cats is what makes them a desired pet for some. Much like a house cat, they can be very affectionate and playful. They’ll even lay down on your lap and purr!
However, they do need to be raised carefully because they can be dangerous, particularly to small children and other pets.
4. Pygmy Goat
Who says horses are the only farm animal that makes for a cool pet? Happy pygmy goats can bond with their owners, enjoy getting pet, and love to nuzzle.
Pygmy goats are very social animals, though, so you should consider getting more than one in order to keep them happy. You’ll also need a large shelter that’s at least 8 by 10 feet and plenty of grass hay or alfalfa hay.
5. Capybaras
Say goodbye to hamsters and guinea pigs—there’s a new pet in town! Capybaras are the largest rodent in the world, weighing 145 pounds or more!
However, they will need quite the habitat to thrive. Capybaras are social creatures, so make sure you get a habitat big enough for at least two. You should also provide a big pool that’s at least 3 feet deep as they are semiaquatic.
While capybaras are social towards their own kind, they are not always able to bond with humans. So, consider getting them from a young age to help ensure they are tame and friendly towards you.
